Best Retail Stocks To Buy For 2014

It was early October when the National Retail Federation made the anouncement: Holiday sales in 2013 could rise 3.9%, despite there being six fewer shopping days before Christmas.

Today, market pundits see a far more ho-hum holiday for retailers.

Nick Colas, market strategist at ConvergEx Group, a global brokerage company based in New York, expects sales to expand 1% to 2% over last year. In a recent note, he writes:

hey had the season pegged for a 3.9% positive comp to last year. While the NRF has been overly conservative in prior years, our indicators actually point to a weaker holiday in 2013ven a negative reading wouldn be a surprise.

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend didn do much to alleviate those worries.

Why? The NRF estimated some 141 million American hit stores and online retailers during weekend, up from 139 million in 2012. But people spent less, with the average shopper shelling out $407.02, against $423.55 last year.

Part of that drop may stem from cautious investors waiting for bigger discounts closer to Christmas, according to Thomson Reuters analyst Jharonne Martis.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Munarriz]

Shares of Vipshop (NYSE: VIPS  ) tumbled 13% on Tuesday. It wasn't necessarily the legislative concerns that knocked the online clothing discounter down. There was a Deutsche Bank downgrade on Monday, and Vipshop also responded to a bearish attack that had used data for traffic tracker Alexa.com to suggest bogus financials.

  • [By Paul Goodwin]

Vipshop Holdings (VIPS) offers fashionable merchandise, including clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, and more, all at discounted prices.

But what really makes Vipshop special is that sales are all discounted, online, flash sales. That means limited amounts of each product are offered for limited amounts of time, and at a significant discount to full retail, usually 50% to 70% below original retail.

Top Defensive Stocks For 2014

It took a while, but the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) finally warmed up to the start of earnings season by rising 60 points and setting a new all-time record high. Yet even though anxiety about the huge bull-market run that stocks have enjoyed since 2009 has some investors considering whether they ought to take profits and run, today's market action shows a surprising dynamic that is a big shift from more normal investor behavior.

Ordinarily, with markets at new highs, worried investors would bid up shares of consumer giants. Yet many of the Dow's top consumer companies finished lower today. Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) fell two-thirds of a percent, while Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) backed off a 52-week high to finish lower by 0.4%. Both companies generally have defensive characteristics that worried investors typically like, as their businesses aren't very sensitive to changing economic conditions, and they sell products that have relatively inelastic demand. Yet both stocks trade at above-market valuations, and recent concerns about Coke's sales-volume challenges and P&G's product miscues have conservative investors feeling less secure about their ability to withstand a market reversal.

Reseller's exchange retailer Autozone (AZO) has done well in 2014. Even though the stock has been exceptional than the S&P 500, its performance has been weaker than O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) and Advance Auto Parts (AAP). Then again, Autozone is a steady performer and is the cheapest of the part from a valuation perspective, which is the reason investors should consider investigating it.

Steven Senne/AP NEW YORK -- Target (TGT) massive data breach over the holidays helped push its fourth-quarter profit down 46 percent. The discount retailer also said Wednesday that sales fell 5.3 percent as the breach scared off customers. The nation's second-largest discounter also offered a profit outlook below Wall Street expectations as the costs of the breach that affected millions of credit and debit card customers linger. The discounter, based in Minneapolis, said it earned $520 million, or 81 cents a share, for the three months that ended Feb. 1. That compares with a profit of $961 million, or $1.47 a share a year earlier. Revenue fell to $21.5 billion from $22.7 billion. Revenue at stores open at least a year, an important retail measurement, fell 2.5 percent. Analysts had expected a profit of 80 cents on revenue of 21.5 billion, according to FactSet estimates. The breach resulted in $17 million of net expenses in the fourth quarter, Target said, with $61 million of total expenses partially offset by the recognition of a $44 million insurance receivable. Shares of Target rose 99 cents to $57.50 in premarket trading Wednesday as earnings results beat Wall Street estimates by a penny. The stock has fallen about 10 percent since the company disclosed the breach in mid-December. "As we plan for the new fiscal year, we will continue to work tirelessly to win back the confidence of our guests. We are encouraged that sales trends have improved in recent weeks," Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and CEO of Target, said in a statement. The results underscore the big challenges that Steinhafel faces. Even before the breach, Target has struggled with uneven sales since the recession as its middle-income shoppers are still not comfortable in spending. And the company has also grappled with the perception that its prices are too high. Critics also say that the discounter, known for its exclusive limited partnerships with designers, has lost its

    Don't forget the cash flow
With austerity measures hitting home in Europe, it's fairly easy to understand why Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI  ) (NYSE: TI-A  ) , Italy's largest telephone service provider, has struggled mightily. Unlike in the U.S., where a landline or cell phone are viewed as practical necessities, consumers in Italy have had no problem giving up their landlines, or businesses postponing their network expansion, until Italy's economy improves. In fact, in Telecom Italia's first-quarter report, we saw EBITDA decline 10%, to $3.5 billion, and overall sales dip 8%.

Top 5 Consumer Stocks To Invest In 2014

Judith Collins/Alamy WASHINGTON - Home improvement retailer Home Depot (HD) has been in contact with the U.S. Secret Service about an alleged major breach of customer and credit card data that came to light this week, a law enforcement source told Reuters on Thursday. Any investigation by the Secret Service appears to be at a very early stage, the source said. The Secret Service, which declined comment, usually is the lead agency in federal criminal investigations into complex breaches of credit card and other consumer data. Another law enforcement source said the FBI, which also sometimes participates in such investigations, doesn't appear to be involved. It is unclear whether the U.S. Department of Justice is playing any role. Customer data could have been stolen from nearly all of Home Depot's 2,200 stores in the United States, according to information released Wednesday by security blog Krebs on Security. Home Depot hasn't confirmed that a breach occurred and it remains unclear whether or how many customers were impacted. If confirmed, the Home Depot incident could be among the most widespread in the string of security breaches at U.S. retailers in the recent past. Spokeswoman Paula Drake said Wednesday that the retailer is working with IT security firms, including Symantec (SYMC) and FishNet Security, to investigate whether there has been a data breach. A Symantec spokeswoman confirmed that Symantec was assisting with the investigation but didn't elaborate. Home Depot sought to comfort its consumers, promising free identity-protection services, including credit monitoring, to any potentially impacted customers and reassuring that the retailer or the banks that issued the cards will be responsible for any fraudulent charges. Home Depot shares were up 1.6 percent at $90.39 Thursday morning on the New York Stock Exchange. Concerns about a potential Home Depot data theft follow a major breach at retailer Target (TGT), where hackers late last year stole at least 40 million payment card numbers and 70 million other pieces of customer data. -.

If you're a trader, you try to catch these ups and downs. If you're a longer term trader, you sort of go with Japanese equities. The one that I've got in Jubak's Picks is Toyota Motor, (TM), which trades in New York as an ADR. You can also go with something like Torre Industries (TRYIF), which trades as an ADR in New York as well as on the Tokyo exchange. They're the world's largest maker of carbon fiber, good play on exports to the aircraft and car industries. Or you can do something like Seven & I (SVNDY), the Japanese company that owns 7-Elevens around the world. So, those would be my ways to play a weak yen if you want to use Japanese equities for the week and the year ahead.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Brian O'Connell] Micro-brewers aren’t so micro anymore.

The gourmet beer industry is in a quandary these days that will impact the value of industry stocks, such as Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM), Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD), and MolsonCoors (NYSE: TAP), among others. We think Boston Beer, maker of Sam Adams, is in the best position to thrive.

First, let’s wipe the foam way and study a problem for the industry that’s in significant need of a solution.

The brewery industry has unleashed an army of lobbyists upon Washington, DC, to curry favor, twist some arms (and yes, bend some elbows) to convince Congress to reduce tax burdens micro-brewers consider heavy and onerous. These taxes are a bottom line killer in a combative industry.

Companies such as Boston Beer and Anheuser Busch may have a point on high excise taxes. No longer are North America and Europe no-brainers for beer companies. Growth has stagnated in the so-called “old continents” and breweries are looking to new, emerging market opportunities such as China, India, and increasingly, Africa.

But the entire industry has the dry heaves over a declining market, with older Baby Boomers giving up their wicked ways and their Millennial kids opting for that raspberry cake martini over a nice pint of lager.

That’s where the lobbying campaign comes in, with 2012 a banner year for micro-brewery lobbying efforts, and 2013 should follow suit. In fact, lobbying ranks were significantly swelled as the big micro-brewers put the full-court press on Congress to alleviate what industry executives view as exorbitantly higher excise taxes.

This summer, the US Brewers Association launched a huge lobbying effort that targeted 90 US Senators and 250 members of the House of Representatives, with face-to-face meetings on tap with 250 brewery executives.

Under particular lobbying pressure is House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, a Michigan Republica

5 Best Healthcare Technology Stocks To Buy For 2014

Most businesses realise less than 10% of their potential while others rise to extraordinary heights. What separate an ordinary business from an extra-ordinary business is not the quantitative aspects rather the qualitative points.

Here we are going to discuss those qualitative factors that will have a long-term bearing on the business.

A. Financial Management /P>

nbsp; The management should encourage effective Balance Sheet management involving sufficient cash balances and relevant Working Capital management.

nbsp; The management should also encourage giving due regard to conservative accounting treatment.

nbsp; The finance department should ensure that sufficient transparency is maintained as suggested by accounting guidelines prescribed by ICAI and IFRS in future.

nbsp; The most commonly abused accounting practice is about related party transactions. The accounts and audit department should ensure that there is due compliance of Related Party Transactions in spirit and not just by the letter of law.

What is the advantage of being a huge company? There are some. For one, we know the business is or was growable. A lot of small companies stay small because their circle of competence is small. Paradise (PARF) is an over the counter stock. It has a market cap of $10 million. And it dominates the candied fruit market in the U.S. Why isn the company bigger?

For a while now, I've been a fan of the natural gas compression company, Exterran Holdings (NYSE: EXH  ) , which provides operations, maintenance, service, and equipment for both oil and natural gas production. Exterran's stock has had a steady climb the last couple of years -- it's up over 40% this year alone. Currently, Exterran is trading in the upper $20 range, and with a price target of $33, it still seems to have some upside. Top Biotech Companies To Invest In 2015

Top Biotech Companies To Invest In 2015: ImmunoCellular Therapeutics Ltd (IMUC)

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Ltd., incorporated on March 20, 1987, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company. The Company is engaged in developing immune-based therapies for the treatment of cancers, such as brain, ovarian and other solid tumors. Immunotherapy is an approach to treat cancer in which a patients own immune system is stimulated to target tumor antigens, which are molecular signals that the immune system uses to identify foreign bodies. The Companys products include ICT-107, ICT-140, ICT-120, ICT-109 and DIAAD. ICT-107, the pipeline product, is a Phase II therapeutic dendritic cell (DC) vaccine for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the common and lethal type of brain cancer. ICT-107 is designed to activate a patients immune system to target six different tumor-associated antigens. In February 2012, it acquired a world-wide license from the University of Pennsylvania and The John Hopkins University (JHU).

The Company in addit ion to ICT-107, is also developing other therapeutic DC vaccines: ICT-140 for ovarian cancer and ICT-121 for recurrent GBM. ICT-140 targets seven tumor-associated antigens expressed on ovarian cancer cells. ICT-107 is a DC vaccine that targets six different tumor-associated antigens that are found on patients tumor cells; four of the six antigens are expressed on CSCs. The therapeutic vaccine is used subsequent to conventional therapy or concomitantly with chemotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed GBM. ICT-140 is a DC vaccine that targets seven different ovarian cancer antigens. ICT-121 is a DC vaccine that targets CD133 antigens; it has the potential to be a universal cancer vaccine because CD133 is widely expressed on CSCs from a majority of cancers. Data from this small study demonstrated that ICT-109 had a statistically ability to discriminate between cancerous and non-cancerous samples, suggesting the potential to detect pancreatic and lung ca! ncer in plasma and s erum study sets. The DIAAD (differential immunization for an! tigen and antibody discovery) platform it acquired from Molecular Discoveries utilizes immunological tolerization to accelerate the discovery of the molecular differences between diseased cells and their normal counterparts. The monoclonal antibodies produced by DIAAD provide the basis for the discovery and development of its potential diagnostic and therapeutic products.

The Company competes with Dendreon, Oncothyreon, Galena, Bavarian Nordic and Immunovaccine, Northwest Biotherapeutics, Prima Biomed, DCPrime, Roche/Genentech, Seattle Genetics, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Immunogen.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Smith On Stocks]

Using my assumptions, the common of Agenus might be worth about $7.00 per share in early 2014 based on the royalties from the Glaxo vaccines and the net operating loss carry forward even if every other asset in the company were valued at zero. However, there may be substantial value in Agenus' internal vaccine programs in recurrent and newly diagnosed glioblastoma and the genital herpes vaccine. Based on a comparison to peer companies like Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBO) and ImmunoCellular Therapeutics (IMUC), I believe that the internal programs at Agenus currently may be worth $150 million or $4.45 per share. Adding this to the value of the MAGE A-3 vaccine could produce a stock price of $11.00 in early 2014.

Top Safest Stocks For 2014

Pipeline blaze in the Gulf. Photo credit: AP Photo/US Coast Guard, Petty Officer 3rd Class Carlos Vega.

So far, 2013 isn't shaping up to be the energy industry's safest year. A number of disasters have occurred, which have brought unwanted attention to the industry. Here's a look at the industry's five biggest blunders so far this year.

A Herculean disaster averted in the Gulf
Just this past week, a blowout occurred on a Hercules (NASDAQ: HERO  ) -owned rig operating in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural gas leaking from a well off the coast of Louisiana caught fire and spread to the Hercules rig. Fortunately, all 48 personnel in the rig were safely evacuated. However, the incident underscores the risks of drilling offshore. It could have been a lot worse, as no one was hurt, and this is a natural gas well so the environmental threats are far less than if it were an oil well. While the well is not yet under control, Hercules investors appear to have caught a break, which is why stock was down only about 4% on the week.

5 Best Asian Stocks To Own For 2015: Raytheon Company(RTN)

Raytheon Company, together with its subsidiaries, provides electronics, mission systems integration, and other capabilities in the areas of sensing, effects, and command, control, communications, and intelligence systems, as well as mission support services in the United States and internationally. It operates in six segments: Integrated Defense Systems, Intelligence and Information Systems, Missile Systems, Network Centric Systems, Space and Airborne Systems, and Technical Services. The Integrated Defense Systems segment provides integrated naval, air, and missile defense and civil security response solutions. The Intelligence and Information Systems segment offers intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, advanced cyber solutions, weather and environmental solutions, and information-based solutions for law enforcement and homeland security. The Missile Systems segment develops and produces weapon systems, including missiles, smart munitions, close-in weapon systems, projectiles, kinetic kill vehicles, and directed energy effectors for the armed forces of the U.S. and other allied nations. The Network Centric Systems segment provides net-centric mission solutions, including integrated communications systems, command and control systems, combat systems, and operations and precision components for the U.S. federal, state, and local government customers, as well as civil customers. The Space and Airborne Systems segment designs and develops integrated systems and solutions for missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; precision engagement; unmanned aerial operations; and space. The Technical Services segment provides training, logistics, engineering, product support, and operational support services for the mission support, homeland security, space, civil aviation, counterproliferation, and counterterrorism markets. Raytheon Company was founded in 1922 and is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Smith]

The common factor in all these variants is Australia's intention to use Raytheon's (NYSE: RTN  ) AN/BYG-1 advanced submarine combat control system to fight the boats. As for the rest of the plan, the country has time to work out the details. According to the white paper, the RAN's Collins-class fleet is good for 28 years of service life per sub, suggesting they won't start going obsolete until 2024 at the earliest.

  • [By Katie Spence]

Plus, following the unsuccessful missile test, it's become clear that more needs to be done to make sure that the U.S. has effective ballistics missile interceptors. That's great news for defense contractors. Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) , for one, is the prime contractor on the Missile Defense Agency's Joint National Integration Center, a simulating and war-gaming center that provides answers for America's missile defense capabilities. Boeing makes ground-based interceptors. And Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) builds the SM-3, a defense weapon used to destroy incoming ballistic missiles.

Top Safest Stocks For 2014: Pimco High Income Fund(PHK)

PIMCO High Income Fund is a closed ended fixed income mutual fund launched and managed by Allianz Global Investors Fund Management LLC. The fund is co-managed by Pacific Investment Management Company LLC. It invests in the public fixed income markets across the globe. The fund invests in U.S. dollar denominated high-yield corporate debt obligations. It employs fundamental analysis along with a top down stock picking approach to make its investments. PIMCO High Income Fund was formed on April 30, 2003 and is domiciled in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Morgan Housel]

Interest rates have risen over the last month, offering a taste. Pimco High Income Fund (NYSE: PHK  ) is down 10% in the last month. The Vanguard Long Term Corporate Bond Fund (NASDAQ: VCLT  ) lost 4.6%. Mortgage REITS sensitive to the same interest rate risk have been pummeled; Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) shares are off by one-fifth over the last year.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Lesson 1: Income is king.
A look at the four funds trading at the highest premiums to net asset value reveals a common thread: They're all focused on maximizing income. What's interesting, though, is that they use different methods to reach the same ends. Among the three PIMCO funds, PIMCO High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) looks largely to the high-yield bond market for its holdings, while PIMCO Corporate & Income Opportunities (NYSE: PTY  ) has a somewhat lower distribution rate but has a sizable allocation to investment-grade debt. The fund with the highest premium, PIMCO Global StocksPLUS, uses futures contracts to add stock exposure to its portfolio of income-producing bonds. Finally, BlackRock Virginia Municipal Bond rounds out the top four with its tax-free bond portfolio.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

The S&P 500 is up 0.1% at 1,800.48 at 2:29 p.m., getting a boost from big gains in Precision Castparts (PCP), which has risen 3.6%, Jabil Circuit (JBL), which is up 2.5% to $20.32 and Celgene (CELG), which has jumped 2.5% to $154.86. Even Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) is lending helping hand today–its shares are up 2.5%.

  • [By CanadianValue]

The fiscal year of Precision Castparts (PCP) ends in March. Through the first nine months of the fiscal year, sales advanced 16% and EPS grew 18%. The company is on track to earn about $8.40 for fiscal 2012, up from $7.01 a year ago. Precision has deployed its prodigious cash flow on acquisitions. It created a new platform in aerospace structural components with the $800 million-acquisition of Primus International. In addition, it beefed up its fastener and forgings businesses with two small acquisitions and added to its technical capability in oil & gas pipes with two other acquisitions. The deal making in the oil patch paid off in September when it won a large order to supply specialty pipe to Saudi Aramco with a unique offering that allows customers to pump more oil in less time. Precision has since won an order even larger than the first. We expect more growth from Precision this year as Boeing and Airbus raise production rates. Despite last year activity, Precision still has more cash than debt on its balance sheet, giving it plenty of flexibility to make more acquisitions.
