Ben Bernanke's term as chairman of the Federal Reserve ends in just eight months. Most of those familiar with his thinking say he doesn't want another term. Moving back to Princeton where he can lecture undergrads who don't understand Fed policy is apparently more appealing than being lectured by pundits who don't understand Fed policy.
As Bernanke's term winds down, a lot of people are going to be asking the question: How'd he do? How is history going to judge him?
And here's the truth: We are terrible at answering that question.
The last two Fed chairman -- Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan -- were eventually remembered in a completely different light than when they ran the Fed.
Paul Volcker was likely the most hated Fed chairman to have ever served. In an attempt to slay inflation, he jacked up short-term interest rates to near 20% in the early 1980s, in effect intentionally sending the economy into recession.
Outrage ensued. Barely a year into his term, Volcker was burned in effigy by protestors on the steps of the Capitol. Neil Irwin writes in his book The Alchemists:

Signal lost
To say that competition is increasing in the satellite television sector would be a gross understatement. Though that hasn't stopped DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH ) from hitting a new high despite a cluster of worries that should have scared investors in the opposite direction. - [By Roberto Pedone]
Another cable service provider that's starting to push within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Dish Network (DISH), which provides a direct broadcast satellite subscription television service in the U.S. This stock is off to a hot start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 30%.
If you look at the chart for DISH Network, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last two months, with shares moving between $41 on the downside and $46.89 on the upside. Shares of DISH are now starting to spike higher right off its 50-day moving average of $43.91 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of DISH within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in DISH if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $46 to its 52-week high at $46.89 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.61 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then DISH will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $50 to $60 a share, or even $65 a share.
Traders can look to buy DISH off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $43.91 a share, or below some more key near-term support at $42.85 a share. One can also buy DISH off strength once it takes out that breakout level with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
- [By Holly LaFon] bought 4 million shares of new holding Dish Network Corp. (DISH) in the fourth quarter at about $26 per share.
Dish Network Corp. offers satellite television products and services. Dish Network Corp. has a market cap of $12.72 billion; its shares were traded at around $29.02 with a P/E ratio of 10.4 and P/S ratio of 1. Dish Network Corp. had an annual average earnings growth of 28% over the past 10 years.
Dish was also a featured Magic Formula stock pick on GuruFocus in September 2011. The author notes that the company share price has stagnated while the underlying business value has increased. Over the last five years, its share price has declined 24%.
Revenue at the company increased every year from $4 billion in 2001 to $12.6 billion in 2010, and earnings have increased from a net loss of $215 million to a gain of $985 million over the same span of time. Free cash flow has been strong for the last eight years.
The company is highly levered, however. It has about $3.4 billion in cash on its balance sheet, along with about $8.8 billion in long-term liabilities and debt.
It is also losing customers. In its most third quarter, it lost approximately 111,000 net subscribers, compared to 29,000 subscribers lost during the third quarter of 2010. The increase in lost subscribers was from increased competitive pressures and competitorspromotional offers. Also, telecommunications companies continuing to gain new customers and the overall weak economy contributed.
oing forward, we plan to build on the momentum of our introduction of the Blockbuster-branded programming service which allows DISH customers to stream movies and TV shows as well as receive DVDs by mail, said Joe Clayton, president and CEO of DISH Network.

Drug Product Candidates in Development
APC-100 is an anti-inflammatory drug candidate. In animal studies, APC-100 demonstrated potent anti-androgenic and anti-inflammatory activities against prostate tumors growing in animal models and showed a safety profile in preclinical safety studies. APC-100! has demonstrated pharmacological characteristics as an oral or injectable anti-inflammatory and anti-androgenic drug candidate with multiple mechanisms of action. APC-100 decreases secretion of human Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), by human prostate cancer cells growing in mice and also increases the time-to-tumor progression and survival of PCa mice with CS-PCa and CR-PCa tumors.
APC-200 is a drug candidate for both castrate-sensitive and castrate resistant prostate cancer. APC-200 blocks androgen-induced hydrogen peroxide production and inflammation and inhibits mouse PCa. In animal studies, APC-200 was an inhibitor of chronic inflammation, also completely inhibiting oxidase mediated high rates of hydrogen peroxide. APC-200 is developed as an oral drug, specifically in appropriate formulations for patients with PCa.
APC-300 is a multi-targeted small molecule therapeutic drug, which demonstrates anti-inflammatory, pro-apoptotic anti-cancer activities for prostate cancer patients, including men with metastatic CR-PCa. In pre-clinical in vivo studies conducted, APC-300 demonstrated the ability to inhibit human tumor growth and kill both castrate-sensitive and castrate-resistant human prostate cancer tumors. It also decreased human tumor volumes and suppressed local metastasis in human xenograft models, where malignant human prostate or human melanoma tumor tissue was grafted onto athymic immunosuppressed experimental mice. APC-300 inhibited human androgen receptor protein production in these studies. It also inhibited PSA secretion by human PCa cells, which is a serum marker for human prostate cancer.

Although the market seems to be losing traction, and even losing ground now, the same can't be said of every single stock. A handful of stocks like China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc. (NASDAQ:CJJD), Vuzix Corp. (OTCBB:VUZI), and Adamis Pharmaceuticals Corp. (NASDAQ:ADMP) are forging ahead, doling out gains against the grain. Not that moving higher while other names are moving lower is a sure sign that ADMP, VUZI, and CJJD will remain in their uptrends indefinitely, but it sure doesn't hurt their odds. Here's a closer look at each one and why you'd want to add them to your watchlist.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Matt DiLallo]
The management team at oil and gas companyAtlas Energy (NYSE: ATLS ) has really taken Warren Buffett's advice to heart. Buffett's old adage to "be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful" seems to be that team's approach. After selling its shale assets to Chevron at the top of the market, the company has been diligently acquiring natural gas assets at the market's low. That blueprint continues to be followed as evidenced by the recently announced acquisition of substantial natural gas assets via its master limited partnership, Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP ) .
- [By Joseph Hogue]
Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP ) offers the lowest cost to DCF and the second-highest yield of the group. The company is active in the Barnett Shale, Appalachian Basin, the Raton Basin, the Black Warrior Basin and the Mississippi Lime with an interest in over 12,000 producing natural gas and oil wells. The partnership's coverage ratio just missed a top rank as well, and the units could be a solid addition. May saw insider purchases by four officers for 52,530 units at an average price of $19.73 per unit with no insider selling in the past twelve months.
- [By Robert Rapier]
The second, and riskier, option is to buy MLPs engaged in natural gas production. While these tend to have some portion of their output hedged against sharp price fluctuations, they retain much more exposure to the ups and downs of natural gas prices than the midstream partnerships, which function as toll collectors.EV Energy Partners(NASDAQ: EVEP),Atlas Resource Partners(NYSE: ARP),BreitBurn Energy Partners(NASDAQ: BBEP) andMemorial Production Partners(NASDAQ: MEMP) are some of the upstream (oil and gas production) partnerships in the US shale plays.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Burrows]
True, there’s probably room for one national chain, such as Best Buy or maybe even HHGregg (HGG). After all, brick-and-mortar retail is hardly dead. But outside of a merger or roll-up, but it’s hard to see how RadioShack — a company that’s been behind the curve for a decade or more — could be the one left standing.
