Top 5 Internet Companies For 2014

What do Joe's Jeans Inc. (NASDAQ:JOEZ) and NQ Mobile Inc. (NYSE:NQ) have in common? Well, nothing ... at least on the surface. JOEZ is, as the name would imply, a denim company, while NQ, as the name would vaguely suggest, a mobile internet service provider. There is one common element between the two companies right now, however, at least in my eyes ... both are likely to be at the beginning of major (read "trade-worthy") bounces.

For NQ, the setup stems from a harsh drubbing shares suffered last week, falling from $22.88 to a low of $8.46 in just one day on the heels of a "hit piece" article that called NQ Mobile a fraud. As is so often the case, the market sold first and asked questions later, pulling the stock down to about a third of its prior value in a matter of minutes.

I hesitated, but she insisted that I come to the headquarters of Barry Diller's IAC (IACI) for an in-person demonstration of the product, which she called an "online TV platform." Once I was there, I understood. "Surprisingly high-quality signal," I scribbled in my notebook. "Place- and time-shifting!"

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Advisors' Opinion:

Finally, outside the Dow, eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) dropped almost 7% after its own quarterly report, despite seeing continued growth in both its PayPal electronic payments business and its namesake auction and marketplace site. The company guided analysts toward the lower part of previously announced ranges for earnings and sales, though, as problems in key markets like Europe and Korea could hurt the company's overall results for the remainder of the year. Given the wrangling between PayPal, card companies like AmEx, and tech companies to try to come up with payment solutions for mobile platforms, you can expect plenty of jockeying for position among these companies well into the future.

Getty Images Bitcoin made headlines last year when the value of all outstanding pieces of the electronic currency reached nearly $10 billion. It's not just speculators drawn to the new currency. Many businesses are also attempting to cash in on this growth: Several public companies, including Zynga (ZNGA) and Overstock.com (OSTK), accept Bitcoins as a form of payment. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen's firm has invested nearly $50 million in Bitcoin-related ventures, and it is looking to invest even more. And the Winklevoss twins -- who notoriously accused Facebook's (FB) Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea -- have been "in dialogue" with the SEC about opening the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to Bloomberg. Yet a new survey from TheStreet.com (TST) reveals that 76 percent of consumers are not familiar with Bitcoin -- and 79 percent would never consider owning a currency like it. Does this signal opportunity for savvy investors? Or is this a fad you'd be wise to avoid? The Basics of Bitcoin Bitcoin is a completely unregulated form of currency developed by an anonymous Japanese programmer (according to some apocryphal claims) as a completely digital, peer-to-peer payment system that is independent of national currencies (which, Bitcoin users argue, are all subject to the riskiness of the underlying country). Bitcoins are rewarded throughout the day to a "Bitcoin miner" whose computer solves a series of algorithms quicker than other miners. The puzzles become more difficult over time, so the calculations take longer and the computations require more computing power. There will eventually be a total of 21 million Bitcoins (12.4 million are in circulation today) and we won't reach the point that they are effectively "mined out" until 2040. The value of a Bitcoin is supposed to be market-driven, meaning they're worth whatever the two parties in a transaction value them as. For example, in one of the original Bitcoin transactions, a "mi

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) said it would split into two listed companies, separating its computer and printer businesses from its faster-growing corporate hardware and services operations, and eliminate another 5,000 jobs as part of its turnaround plan. HP said its shareholders would own a stake in both businesses through a tax-free transaction next year. Each business contributes about half of HP's revenue and profit. Shares of the 75-year-old company, which has struggled to adapt to the new era of mobile and online computing, were up 4.4 percent at $36.78 in late morning trading on Monday. Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman told Reuters the newly created HP Inc. would mostly stick to its knitting -- PCs and printers -- for now, while exploring related markets such as 3D printing. Richard Drew/APHewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman The company has no plans to venture into the hotly contested consumer mobile devices market, where it stumbled years ago. "There's still lots of opportunities in other adjacencies, where we don't chase the market leaders," said Whitman, who will be CEO of HP Enterprise, the business that will sell computer servers and networking gear and data storage to businesses. Whitman said HP's balance sheet had improved markedly over the past few years, allowing the company to come to the decision to split up from a position of strength. "This would not have been possible three years ago," she said, referring to a proposal to spin off PCs in 2011. Some analysts expressed skepticism about the latest move. Barclays analysts noted that the sudden announcement in 2011 was disruptive to HP's sales, its sales force and demand. "If the [latest] decision by HP isn't well communicated or is not well executed, the negative share shifts could be material," they said in a note. Analysts at Bernstein Research also warned of "material negative synergies" and one-time costs associated with the spinoff, largely in purchasing
